Mineral Photography

Wow, mineral photography is fun! There’s so much beauty in these materials that come straight out of planet Earth, and what an enjoyable challenge to bring out that beauty photographically!

This piece of amber is full of dinosaur-era mojo, and it just sings when exposed to a little backlighting. This is one piece out of a much, much larger collection of minerals that need to be photographed, documented, and cataloged for a client. What you can’t see in this image is the scale: this piece of amber is almost 20 inches long! Most of the pieces in this collection are similarly sized, and some of them are as many as 4 feet wide. Lighting is a challenge, focus stacking is a challenge (this image hasn’t been stacked yet), and even the staging is tough for some of these. I love it! Keep an eye out for more images coming soon!
